ever turned over your favourite moisturiser, scanned the back, + felt like you were reading a secret code? you’re not alone. one word that pops up on almost every bottle: from your luxury face cream to your supermarket body wash: is "parfum" (or "fragrance").

it sounds fancy, maybe even a little romantic. but in the world of skincare education, that one word is actually a massive "keep out" sign. it’s the ultimate loophole that allows brands to hide a cocktail of hundreds of different chemicals without ever telling you what they are.

at the zook lab, we’re all about peeling back those labels. we believe you deserve to know exactly what you’re putting on your skin. + recently, the rules have started to change in a big way. let’s dive into why "parfum" has been such a mystery + what the new transparency rules mean for your skin + your health.

the "parfum" loophole: a quick 1 min read

for decades, fragrance has been protected as a "trade secret." the logic was that if a brand listed every single chemical used to create their signature scent, competitors could just copy it. because of this, international labelling laws allowed companies to bundle potentially hundreds of individual ingredients under the single umbrella term "parfum" or "fragrance."

here is the reality: a single "fragrance" can contain anywhere from 30 to 200+ distinct substances. these can include:

  • synthetic musks

  • phthalates (which help the scent last longer but are often linked to hormone disruption)

  • solvents

  • preservatives

  • petroleum-derived chemicals

because they were hidden, you had no way of knowing if the product contained something that might be irritating your skin or affecting your health. until now.

the new rules: why the labels are getting longer

the world is finally catching on to the "fragrance secret," + the european union (eu) is leading the charge. historically, brands only had to name 26 specific fragrance allergens if they were present in a product above a certain amount. if you’ve ever seen words like limonene or linalool at the very end of your ingredient list, those are two of the original 26.

but as of late 2023, the eu introduced regulation 2023/1545. this new rule has expanded that list from 26 to 82 fragrance allergens that must be individually named on the label.

what does this mean for us in australia?

while the accc (australia’s consumer watchdog) hasn't made this a mandatory requirement just yet, most global brands follow the eu standards so they can sell their products everywhere. this means you’re going to start seeing a lot more "scary-looking" chemical names at the bottom of your labels.

don't panic: this isn't necessarily because the products have changed. it’s because the curtains are being pulled back. transparency is finally arriving, + it’s a huge win for those of us trying to look after our skin health.

why your skin barrier is the real boss

at the zook lab, we’re obsessed with the skin barrier. think of your skin like a well-tuned car; if you put the wrong fuel in or let the exterior get rusty, the whole system starts to fail. your skin barrier is your first line of defence against the world.

harsh actives like retinoids + high-strength acids are often blamed for stripping the barrier, but fragrance is a silent saboteur. it is one of the leading causes of allergic contact dermatitis.

when you apply hidden fragrance chemicals to your face every day, you might not notice a reaction immediately. but over time, these ingredients can cause "micro-inflammation." this weakens the barrier, increases your risk of infection, + makes your skin more sensitive to everything else: including the sun.

fragrance and the sun: a risky duo

speaking of the sun, here is something many people don't realise: many fragrance ingredients are "photosensitisers." this means that when they are on your skin + exposed to uv rays, they can trigger a reaction that leads to redness, irritation, or even dark spots (hyperpigmentation).

this is why we always advocate for a "shade first" approach. at the zook lab, we believe in protecting your skin through common sense. picture this: instead of slathering on a fragrance-heavy sunscreen + sitting in the direct sun all day, try this hierarchy of defence:

  1. seek shade: it’s free + it’s the best way to keep your skin cool.

  2. physical coverage: reach for natural fibres like cotton or linen. a good hat + a scarf are your best friends.

  3. zinc-based protection: if you’re spending the day at the beach + need that extra layer, choose a mineral (zinc) sunscreen. it’s more natural for the skin + avoids the complex chemical cocktails found in many traditional sunscreens.

remember, you don't need a heavy layer of protection for a quick walk to the mailbox or a drive to the shops. natural sunlight is essential for your vitamin d levels: just be mindful about the "fragrance + sun" combination on those longer days out.

how to decode your labels today

so, how do you navigate this as a consumer? it’s about moving away from "natural" marketing hype + toward evidence-based knowledge. here are our top tips for your next skincare shop:

  • look past the "natural" claim: just because a fragrance comes from an essential oil doesn't mean it’s safe for your skin barrier. many essential oils contain the very allergens the eu is now forcing brands to disclose.

  • search for the "big names": start looking for the 82 allergens. if you see a long list of ingredients like citral, farnesol, geraniol, or eugenol, you know the product is heavily fragranced.

  • choose fragrance-free for leave-on products: your skin has a better chance of staying calm if you avoid fragrance in products that sit on your face all day, like moisturiser or serum.

  • strip it back: if your skin is feeling sensitive, it’s probably trying to tell you something. simplify your routine. focus on hydration + protection rather than complex scents.
